
'Messi' in action as inaugural Mayo Bullfighting tournament gets underway in Kakamega

Five contests will go down in Day One of the tournament that will stretch to Saturday
'Messi' will be in action on Day One of the inaugural Mozzart Bet Mayo Bullfighting contest set to be hosted at the Shieywe Grounds in Kakamega on Wednesday.
Five contests are lined up on the opening day of the tournament, which will run up to Saturday with the final set to be moved to the Mumias Sports Complex.
Messi, a bull from Kabras will open the tournament with a clash against 540 from Butsosto.
Martial from Kabras is scheduled to fight Russia from Idakho in the second contest of the day.
Aguero from Eregi will fight Tiger from Iguhu in the third contest with Shihuvi from Shieywe locking horns with Imbongo from Muranda.
Simba from Shieywe will wrap up Day One activities with a fight against Ngong 005 from Kimingini.
Event organizer Ababu Shago says the tournament seeks to bring the community together and celebrate their rich culture.
"Bullfighting has for long been used for political purposes, but we intend to bring the community together and celebrate our culture," said Shago.
Shago, further intends to start a fully fledged bullfighting league, in the larger Western region, possibly from next year.
The bullfighting enthusiasts revealed that bull owners had embraced the idea with local leaders also endorsing it.
" Bullfighting is recognized the world over as a competitive sport, but we do it for cultural purposes. Finances allowing, I intend to run a league from next year.
I have mooted the idea to several bull owners and they are positive about it," he added.
Three fights will go down on Day Two of the tournament with more set to be held in the final day.
